This is the kind of publicity he doesn't want. The kind which makes ISPs
reluctant to host him.
Oh, and in response to DPF's comment about the DMA claims that there are
no real spammers in NZ, they're using narrow definitions.
Steve Baron has been large-scale fax spamming in NZ for years and has
attempted to branch out into mail spamming several times.

This is, I agree, a spectacularly inept piece of "journalism", barely
deserving of the name. Rule 1. "get both sides of the story" (and if
possible comment from a knowledgeable neutral party) has been
blatantly violated. (Ducks, expecting a large stone to come crashing

I was hoping it was going to be the same reporter as did the story on
how internet child-porn collectors were (most?/all?/actually 15% if
you're very generous with your definitions) working with children, and
how these people (most?/all? actually 11%, including the undie
thieves) had convictions for "real life" sexual offences, etc. But no,
it appears the Press has at least two inept and/or biased reporters on
internet questions.
Anna Claridge (spam) and
Yvonne Martin (porn)

interception, which significantly failed to mention the impact of the
Crimes Amendment No. 6 Act, despite my having specifically drawn it to
her attention.

Actually, it wouldn't surprise me if those agencies were powerless to
act without a formal complaint from the public. Bureaucrats are

write up actual complaints relating to specific acts is all for

Oh golly gosh, a WHOLE 6 hours.
I guess an hour of that was writing the press release.
I spent more time than that assisting Juha to get the information he
needed to find the spammer in the first place.
Juha spent 3 weeks tracking the guy down and getting the interviews, then
another week checking with the various agencies at my suggestion, holding
off publication until he got responses back and things stirred up
somewhat.
To have ISOCNZ/InternetNZ show up with self-promotional press releases
AFTER all the legwork has been done by other people _IS_ glory seeking.
The spammer story and exposure is the result of a lot of hard work by
Juha Saarinen and I'm offended you're trying to cash in on it politically,
as are a number of other people.
A lot of people have invested years of hard work into trying to deal with
the spam problem. It's typical that the glory seekers show up at the last
moments to try and claim the results as theirs.
Unfortunately for you and Internet NZ, the people concerned ARE admins and
they have _long_ memories...

I thought for a minute that was an unfamilar technical term from the
world of spammers; maybe one of the spams I get in Chinese characters.
But I see what you mean.
I'd still be interested to know what was actually being flogged by the
Japanese spam I got once; it was called a "FunnyGo", and was pictured
(alongside a lot of dildos and similar equipment) with no clue as to
scale. A flat horizontal rectangular platform with some tubular device
held horizontally above it on an arm.
Might have been anything from an overhead projector to a tanning bed.
But I can't imagine how something that shape would fit into the
"marital aids" class that it appeared to be in.
I can't help it; 99.9% of spam anmnoys the hell out of me, but some
just arouses my curiosity. But before I get blamed for perpetuating
it, I can truthfully say I've never bought anything from a spammer -
or a telemarketer.
I may have purchased the odd thing from a junk-mailed catalog, tho'

Why would you want to make your penis fast? :-) I've seen creams and

Forgot to respond to this bit. It's a short conversation between
Dave and HAL which starts off with "What exactly is spam, HAL?" and
covers the basics. An animated gif by the look of it, but it just
has words. HAL's "eye" changes slightly when Dave speaks.

You seem to think this is about credit - I'm more concerned with
stopping spam - as is Juha I would say.
I absolutely agree - Juha did a great job tracking the guy down and
getting a major story in the Herald about it. He has all our thanks.
We need more journalists like him.
But the reality is that different people can contribute to stopping
spam in different ways. Journalists can get stories published but
generally they can't lodge complaints with regulatory authorities.
Advocacy groups like INZ can lodge complaints, and can help get
greater publicity on an issue. Also INZ is well poised to lobby NZ
Govt to pass anti spam legislation (if that is what the members want
us to do).
If you want to keep running your own private battles Alan, you're free
to do so. I respect the huge contribution you have made to battling
spam. But regardless of your opinion, I'm going to keep doing what I

You could have filed the complaints without making a press release about
it. The fact that you did seems to indicate you're more interested in the
publicity than the spammer being shut down.
Now that the spammer's said he's sorry, I gather you're going to withdraw
the complaints. Why?
Do we forgive bank robbers and let them continue once they promise to
continue? At a claimed 100 million messages/day and recipient ISP handling
costs of around 0.1c/Message, that's $100k/day (US$).
Add in the time taken to Just Hit Delete (JHD) by humans and lost messages
caused by being swamped in spam, so JHDing genuine mail, that's more like
$1million/day.
How much did he make out of the spam? Why should be be allowed to retain
any of it? Allowing that will only encourage more to try.

So far all I see out of INZ/ISOCNZ is a bunch of handwringing and attempts
to redefine what spam is to please the DMA. you haven't even managed to
get an ISP code of practice widely accepted after 5 years of trying.

seems like a (foolish) cheap shot; even if you were right, there
could be good (acceptable) reasons for such publicity (even if it
was done with a personal business interest in mind)

that's a valid question though... but I can think of answers that
