Ex-priest jailed for child sex crimes
September 12, 2003
A 63-YEAR-OLD former Catholic priest was today jailed for indecently dealing
with young girls in his former north west Queensland parish. Neville Joseph
Creen was sentenced in the Brisbane District Court to three and a half years
in jail, suspended after 14 months.
He pleaded guilty to 34 charges of indecently dealing with 20 young girls in
the Mt Isa school attached to the parish where he served as a priest between
June 1973 and December 1981.
The girls were then aged between four and 13, the court was told.
District Court Judge Ian Wiley said two of the girls were aged six or less
at the time of the offences.
The court was told Creen touched them on the chest, vagina and penetrated
them digitally, often after he had asked them to sit on his knee. "You have
betrayed your God, your religion, your vows, your parishioners, your friends
and each of the girls and their families," Judge Wiley said.
"There is nothing to suggest the girls did anything to invite your
misconduct."
Creen had pleaded guilty to the offences but said in a statement to the
court on Tuesday his "repulsive behaviour" had been due to his own sexual
naivety and his sheltered upbringing.

Ah, religion and its proponents. Great bunch.
And they wonder why churches are empty.
But I guess the churches can always up their focus on politics instead. They
feel more self righteous joining the ranks of the left - saves 'em having to
look inwardly.
You are right of course, what price the shattered innocence of those kids,
he probably should be locked up for a very long time. All I can suggest is
that the Judge was distracted by the fact that it was girls he was
interfering with not boys???

this is the third such case of similar lenient suspended sentences I can
recall in the last 6 months. Seems like you'll get locked up for 1 year or
two for drunk driving without hurting anyone else on the road, but molesting
girls/boys especially when they're in your care as a adult in responsibility
position (read: priest, teacher) and have enuf character references and
community reps of your side, as was the case of a School Principal in Cairns
4 months ago, then you won't have to ear hardly any time in prison.

Mark, the churches are empty not because of a consciously thought out
reaction to the religion but because television viewing took over the
available attention span. Religion died through negligence not an
application of Reason. People are not more ' Reasonable' now compared
to the 1950s.
The ' Church' has tried getting the flock back by being trendy and
tacking up political stances about 'issues'. This way it has just got
tarred with a political brush and has no more relevance than the
political party it is associated with. This is a shame because the Ten
Commandments was the hinge on which we in the western world once used
as the basis for behaviour and therefore the concept of law.
Television and it's affects is what changed us, not ' Thought' about
religious precepts. So when you say ' they feel more self righteous
joining the ranks of the left ' you are only partly right. Look to
the causes of the decline.

I think blaming TV is taking it a bit far but the number of choices of
what to do in one's time off work has changed enormously and maybe
church looks like a dull way of spending a Sunday hour than the
alternatives - or even doing the housework so as to free up one's time.
Church used to be - and for some people still is - the place where they
can guarantee seeing friends and acquaintances at least once a week. It
was safe and respectable: women and children could go there but not to a
bar. Many community events - church bazaar, socials - added to the
attraction of belonging to a church.
It also used to be a public demonstration of one's standing as a decent
person, being a regular church-goer.
Whether because of competing secular attractions or better education or
a climate of individuality, more Christians began to see attendance at
church as unnecessary for themselves even though they would strongly
support your view on the importance of the ten commandments and the need
for good ethical behaviour and for putting their faith into action by
being good citizens, parents and friends.

I think you are being a bit cynical there, Stan. Many people I know have,
like myself, rejected religion because of it's hypocrisy and the lack of any
tangible proof of the existence of any gods
