INTERNET subscribers may be given free filtering software by the Federal
Government to prevent children accessing pornography.
Additional funding may also be made available for the Government's
internet safety advisory body, NetAlert, to address the concerns of parents.
The Communications Minister, Helen Coonan, yesterday said these were two
of the options being considered, after a barrage of questions and
criticism of the Government over the the issue.
The Family First senator, Steve Fielding, said the Government had been
talking about internet filtering for more than two years and had done
"diddly squat" on the issue.
The Labor senator Stephen Conroy asked Senator Coonan about the
truthfulness of a recent report that consumers might soon be able to
download free filtering software. "We are looking at a range of options
… we are always looking at alternatives and that's one of them," she said.
She said the Government was also looking at "bolstering" NetAlert and
would not rule out the prospect of forcing internet service providers to
install filters.

The only concern here is that parents aren't accepting their
responsibility to supervise their own kids.
